Very demure, very mindful

It seems like brat summer turned very demure overnight. The new buzzword caught on and entered the Internet’s lexicon like wildfire after creator Jools Lebron, known as @joolieannie on TikTok, posted playful rants about being "demure," "mindful," and "cutesy" in her mundane, day-to-day activities.

Demure joins the slew of words/phrases we have adopted thanks to TikTok. In the past, we’ve seen "it’s giving", "girlypop”, “yapping”, “pookie”, and “aura” emerge from viral TikTok videos. It’s fascinating to see how instant yet long-lasting the real-life effects of short-form video content are. The virality that comes from TikTok, or even Vine back in the day, are more quotable since the audio-visual medium already shows you the way to do it, as opposed to memes which are images or text posts. As much as we loved the Olympics, trying to utter words akin to “clock in like the pommel horse nerd” is still a little weird IRL. It just makes more sense in the written context since it originated on Twitter.

Disney magic

Disney’s D23 fan expo took place last weekend and while I did include some announcements in my last issue, here is a full breakdown of what went down in Anaheim.

Miley Cyrus became the youngest honoree to be recognised as a Disney Legend. Country singer Lainey Wilson performed ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ from Hannah Montana before Miley took the stage.
Disney is banking hard on nostalgia as a bunch of sequels fill its upcoming slate. Frozen 3, Incredibles 3, Zootopia 2, Moana 2, an Inside Out TV series, and Toy Story 5 whose concept art was shown suggesting a tech vs. toys storyline.

A couple of brand-new animated projects– Elio and Hoppers, were also announced.
The Marvel Television presentation showed trailer footage for the upcoming Ironheart and the much-awaited, Daredevil: Born Again series. The cast of Agatha All Along also performed a live musical number for the audience.
A few seconds of a start-of-production tease of the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians was shown at the event. The poster and teaser trailer for the new Snow White movie starring Rachel Zegler was also released. Rounding up the live-action segment was the reveal of a new Lilo & Stitch movie in production and a sizzle reel of Tron: Ares.
The trailer for Skeleton Crew was dropped in the Lucasfilm presentation along with behind-the-scenes footage of Andor season 2 and the Mandalorian and Grogu movie, featuring Pedro Pascal, which has started its principal photography.
The Greatest Showman, Frozen, and Hercules are being adapted to stage production musicals.
New Disney film titles include a new Avatar instalment and a follow-up to Freaky Friday called Freakier Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan returning, joined by Manny Jacinto.
A bunch of additions are being made to the Disney theme parks, along with a Villains Land.

Emily in Paris season 4 part 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
Bridgerton season 4 has cast its female lead opposite Luke Thompson’s Benedict. Sophie Beckett will be played by Yerin Ha, known from the Paramount+ series adaptation of the “Halo” video game. She is also in the upcoming Dune prequel series.
