Think inside the box
Ahead of the new season of the show Severance, the otherwise elusive Apple TV+’s marketing team had a stroke of genius. The guerilla marketing/performance art tactic involved a live pop-up at the busy Grand Central Station in New York City. The installation involved a glass box with a life-size replica of the Lumon Macrodata Refinement office from the show. But the cherry on the top came on 15th January, when for 3 hours actors Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry and Tramell Tillman entered the box as their characters, doing their desk jobs and interacting with each other as they would in the show. Director-writer of Severance, Ben Stiller was also present on the outside.
Everyone passing paused to watch the silent spectacle, a brilliant take where reality mimiced the themes of the show that highlights a dystopian perspective on the concept of work-life balance, and one’s privacy and agency in a world under acute surveillance. The first episode also dropped on Friday, providing some answers and even more questions post the 3-year long wait after season 1. Episodes will drop weekly, every Friday on Apple TV+.
