Golden Globes: winners, fashion & all the moments in between
Kicking off awards season, host Nikki Glaser proved to be a resounding success as she made jokes about Benny Blanco being Selena Gomez’ boyfriend due to a genie wish, the hardest workers in showbusiness being the servers in the room bringing drinks and food, Timothee Chalamet’s mustache and a Conclave-Wicked crossover rendition of the latter’ song ‘Popular’ called ‘Pope-ular’, amongst many other hilarious one liners. Also, the Timothee Chalament & Glen Powell lookalike contest winners were there, Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore referenced The Substance while presenting together, and an awards leaderboard was projected to the side during the ceremony. Classy, that last one.
The big winners of the night were as follows, (click to read clearly)
Demi Moore’s, and Sebastian Stan’s speeches were particularly touching. Demi Moore won her first ever acting award in 45 years, at 62 years of age. Sebastian Stan highlighted the importance of inclusion and diversity, themes at the center of his film ‘A Different Man’, as he recalled recalled relocating from Romania to the US as a kid. The actor’s Marvel buddy, Anthony Mackie cheered him on for the rest of the night.
Emilia Perez won big, much to disdain of online cinephiles. While they applaud the trans-inclusivity, the French director has famously stated that he refused to research Mexican culture. Also, most completely absent from the noms and wins were Challengers and Dune 2. This could have been due to early 2024 release dates of the movie. Awards season is a victim of the recency effect and usually sees the more recent releases being rewarded. However, Dune 2 was the no. 1 film on Letterboxd, while Zendaya topped the list of ‘Most Watched Actress’. A clear dissonance between the people and the voting committee.
Despite not taking home a Globe, Zendaya was still a winner after a huge ring was spotted on her left hand. While the rest of her jewels were Bulgari, the ring was a Jessica McCormack East-West engagement ring, that she was seen showing off. So congratulations are in order as it seems like Tom Holland and Zendaya are engaged!
In the fashion department, cosplay was bigger than method dressing. Ayo Edebiri wore a grey Loewe suit reminiscent of Julia Roberts at the Golden Globes, who Ayo is currently working with. Kylie Jenner, Timothee Chalamet’s date, while ignored by Demi Moore, did catch the limelight in her Versace chainmail dress, taking a page from the Elizabeth Hurley book of dressing-for-your-actor-boyfriend’s-events from when she dated Hugh Grant. Jeremy Strong inadvertently copied Anne Hathaway’s Princess Diaries look with his mint green bucket hat, and matching ensemble. Andrew Garfield too opted for a different shade of green, but caught the audience’s attention with his smizing and reading glasses (and whatever this Glambot attempt is).

Oh my God my SHAYLA: The viral ‘My Shayla’ TikTok sound comes from Tyrese Gibson’s emotional plea during his 2017 custody battle for his daughter Shayla. Now people are using it for lighter contexts, about something nostlagic or being emo for their loved ones/pets etc.
Project pan: Project Pan is a beauty challenge wherein people aim to finish products and 'hit the pan’ before buying a new one. This is being done to reduce unnecessary consumption in the beauty industry where people usually buy multiples of the same product to try different brands/formulations/shades etc., when in reality just one is sufficient. The idea is to shop your closet first, use products one by one that you already own, and only then venturing out to buy new when you’re completely out of it.
California fires
The wildfires in multiple parts of Los Angeles has led to emergency evacuations and homes of many celebrities and regular folk being completely burnt to ashes. The fires still remain uncontained as efforts are being made by the community to help the displaced with food, shelter and donations. Leighton Meester and Adam Brody, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton, Miles Teller, Cobie Smulders, Milo Ventimiglia and Eugene Levy were some amongst those whose homes were burned.
Due to this tragedy, the SAG Awards canceled its live, in-person nominations announcement, voting for the Oscars has been pushed by 2 days, the noms now being announced on 19th Jan, and the 2025 Critics Choice Awards has been postponed to Sunday, 26th Jan. Originally, the ceremony was set to take place on 12th Jan. But this means nothing in the grand scheme of things. More shocking things have come out of this situation…
Tone deaf request for “private” firefighters.
Maps to track fires being paywalled.
Almond milk coming to the rescue.
Fashion comes first.
Climate change is real.
