All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely BRATS💚
Vol. 1 Issue 17 – 20th July 2024
And the Emmy goes to…
The 2024 Emmy Nominees have been announced. FX’s Shogun came out on top with a whopping 25 nominations (I told you to give it a watch in Issue 12!), including best drama series, best dramatic actress and best dramatic actor for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada respectively. For categories that have been monopolized by HBO’s Succession in previous years, it’s no surprise that a storyline dealing with succession after the death of a leader is also dominating this year. Shogun however, is making history with only being the second non-English language show to be recognised in best drama. All the Japanese cast and crew nominated are also receiving a nod for the the first time.
Shogun is closely followed by The Bear, with 23 nominations (Mind you, these noms are for the second season, NOT the latest third season, in order to be eligible for the 2024 Emmys, television programming had to air between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024), a record for a “comedy” series, the most awarded episode being ‘Fishes’, the very chaotic and anxiety-enducing Christmas episode, which can be heralded as some of the best TV/performances of our time. As for why this show that centers around trauma and suicide is classed as a comedy is still confounding many. While the Academy holds the final say and the show defends its submission by comparing it to real life where “sad things can be funny. Funny things can make you sad…”, it’s still jarring to see it go up against the likes of Abbott Elementary, Hacks and Only Murders in the Building.
Speaking of, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building is next in line with 21 noms (Selena Gomez bags her first acting Emmy nomination), followed by HBO/Max’s True Detective: Night Country (19) and Netflix’s The Crown (18). Overall, with 35 programs, Netflix lead the nominations with 107, followed by FX with 93 (9 programs), HBO with 91 (29 programs) and Apple TV+ with 72 (16 programs). While Disney+ as a network only bagged 19 noms, The Walt Disney Company as a conglomerate got 183 noms (as they own FX, ABC, Hulu and Disney+).
Here is the full list of nominees. The 76th Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on the 15th of September.
World events
America’s former President and the current Republican candidate for the upcoming Presidential Elections, Donald Trump had a close call with an assassination attempt after a bullet grazed his ear while he was making a speech during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Mere days later, it was announced that the current president and Democratic candidate, Joe Biden has contracted Covid. So while the men throw their pity parties, the internet has come out in support of Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic frontrunner. And how exactly are they backing her? With “Operation Coconut Tree”, of course.
In a speech at the White House last year, Kamala Harris said, “My mother used to — she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’”, “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.” While there’s nothing wrong with these statements, it’s the way she said it, with her signature laugh and gesticulating waving hands, that caught people’s attention. And now, coconut and coconut tree emojis have come to represent the Harris-for-President agenda online.
Meanwhile, ahead of the Olympics, the mayor of Paris finally swam in the river Seine to certify that it’s safe to be used by the athletes during the games. Previously, people have been prohibited from swimming in the Seine due to health and safety reasons but apparently, the recent treatment done has rendered it usable. Well, that is until Parisian residents decide they want to sabotage all plans and 💩 in it.
In other news, one of the most major tech failures that we have ever seen took place on Friday as a global Microsoft outage took down banks, aviation, healthcare and corporates around the world. Cyber security firm Crowdstrike is responsible for this IT outage, due to a problem caused by an update to its antivirus software, which is designed to protect Microsoft Windows devices from malicious attacks, leading to the collective BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). As for the solution to this, it seems the age-old “try switching it off and on” for 15 times or more is the official way to go for regular users.
And while we are on the topic of tech, the Princess of Dubai has used Instagram to divorce her husband!
Brat girl summer
Charli XCX’s new album is more than just very catchy hyperpop music, it’s a whole aesthetic. A lifestyle even. This is the summer of brat. Cherry reds and butter yellows had their moment, now it’s all about brat girl green, a shade somewhere between neon green and lime (not unlike Shrek actually). Thanks to Charli XCX’s album cover, brat green is the fun, expressive and loud colour we needed after all the muted sage, moss, emerald and forest greens invaded our couches and kitchen walls.
“For me it just felt like the most WRONG out of all the options we had,” Charli argues. “The most off, the most uncomfortable, the most disorientating. And that’s why I chose it.” Imogene Strauss, her creative director adds, “It’s a shade of green that’s just the right amount of ugly. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But the girls who get it, get it.”
And the it-girls do get it. Plus, it’s not just about the green, it’s the whole persona that comes along with ‘brat’. “A pack of cigs, a Bic lighter, and a strappy white top with no bra” are Charli’s staple. Clean girl aesthetic who? In fact, according to the Instagram account, databutmakeitfashion, white tank tops have seen a rise in popularity this summer (get one for yourself here). There is a certain nonchalance, devil-may-care and real feel to the album and Charli’s branding concept, that feels fresh in a highly curated and cookie cutter era of trends, fashion and styling. There is no particular set of rules (or a requisite use of lime green in your outfit) you need to follow to adopt this style, just an unapologetic attitude about whatever it is that you choose to wear and carry. Anything can be bratty, if you don’t try too hard.
Someone who has been doing brat girl summer justice even before it was a thing, is Bella Hadid. Her street style is so brat-girl-coded with her recent outfits including green leather flared pants, black sunglasses, capri pants, chunky gold jewellery, a ribbed white tank (obviously) and a slouchy, oversized tote by Coach (the Coach rebranding has made its bags the ultimate starter brand for any fashion girlie, as much as I want to gatekeep, Coach is IN right now, be it the Lana 23, the Hamptons, the Soho or Bella Hadid’s Brooklyn Shoulder bag). Bella Hadid can do no wrong and I can’t wait to see what Coperni puts her in for their Paris Fashion Week show at Disneyland Paris in October! I don’t know how they will top the Spring 2023 live spray-painted dress!
